We will continue our SCORe Project this year Chahta - Ima Elementary.
The main focus of the project will be encouraging students to read many, many books.
We also encourage parents to spend time reading with their children.
Research has shown that the more a child reads, the better student he or she will be. This is why several of our teachers wrote a grant in which we were awarded money to purchase equipment and materials to improve reading comprehension in grades Kindergarten through 3rd. The name of this project is SCORe, which stands for Students Count on Reading.

One component of this project is the Reading Counts program. This is a program in which a student reads a book and then takes a computer quiz that tests their comprehension of the story. Students are given a test that determines their reading level and then are given a choice of books on their level. Students are able to successfully read books and this encourages them to read more. This will help them to then be able to read on a higher level. The grant has allowed us to purchase additional classroom libraries of Reading Counts books as well as the quizzes that go with them. As the students read and earn points, the students will learn many about the state we live in, Louisiana.

Another component of the SCORe project is developing vocabulary. Teachers will be doing lots of different activities relating to vocabulary, story retelling, and writing. Through the grant we have been able to purchase some digitial cameras for teachers to use in addtion to several more computers for the classrooms.
